Run by Millennium Solutions, in partnership with Langside College and under contract to the Glasgow Development Agency, the training course equips participants with AS/400 programming skills. The scheme consists of an intensive ten-week course in RPG programming, with an introduction to CL, followed by a ten-week work placement. Course tutors have comprehensive IT experience and the workshops deal specifically with real world business systems and issues. Upon completion of the scheme, our high caliber students leave with the intention to succeed and a professional attitude. The proof of this is in the high retention rate of the placement scheme.
Course Overview
The course is presented in main sections with related topics.
It details a logical and structured approach to the job of programming for the AS/400 and illustrates the integrated design of the AS/400 operating system, its database, productivity tools, and application development aids.
Basic concepts are presented in a plain, no-nonsense manner. Examples are included as reference material. Adequate practical exercises are provided to consolidate skills and knowledge.
Each section contains an overview and outline.
Each topic has defined objectives, discussion points and summary.
The generic features of the AS/400 and its culture are interspersed with every session; using the standard command keys, viewing and printing the on-line Help; accessing special Menus and understanding the system commands.
Business concepts and terminology are explored in context, and the use of system diagrams to define the scope of any programming task is discussed.

- Menus, Commands and Function Keys
- Programming tools including SEU, PDM
- Use of physical and logical files
- Designing and testing Display Files using Screen Design Aid (SDA)
- Designing and prototyping Printer Files using Report Layout Utility (RLU)
- RPG using program and externally described files
- Indicator based and Structured RPG programming
- Use of the Logic Cycle and Level breaks
- CL programming including Display File processing
